"River of Life"
September 2012, Zion National Park, Utah
Pictured above is what can best be described as a river within a river. The entire background is actually a beautiful red-rock river bottom in a remote canyon in Zion National Park. Cutting through the middle of the image from left to right is a 4" wide mini-gorge in the bottom of the river. A steady stream of water flows through the fissure - hence the term "a river in a river". I used a slow shutter speed to give the flowing water the appearance of smoke.
The stunning red color of the rock river bottom is probably due to a high content of iron oxide, but that is frankly just a presumption on my part. The flowing water and the crimson red rock remind me of both the blood of Jesus and the biblical passage in Revelation about the River of Life.
