January 2010, Grand Canyon, Arizona
Snow-covered junipers lie frozen in perfect silence after surviving a furious week-long assault from three successive winter storms. Untold miles of virgin snow carpeted the landscape, unspoiled by visitor's footsteps. The record-breaking storms hit the Grand Canyon in the third week of January 2010. I was fortunate to have been there for the duration. The storms were so powerful that both Interstates 40 and 17 were closed, completely choking off access to one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth. In essence, the Grand Canyon had become my own private studio.
There were times when I stood on overlooks without seeing a single soul for an hour. Getting around was a challenge because the snow was many feet deep, and the snowplows simply could not be everywhere at once. I will never forget that week as long as I live.
