"The Finger of God"

February 2010, Yosemite National Park, California

I shot this panorama of Yosemite Valley from the infamous tunnel view overlook. There is certainly nothing out of the ordinary in that regard. Like countless other photographers, I've shot there many times. However, what made this day special was a fast moving winter storm that caused the landscape to change every few minutes. The strong winds and rain served to keep the overlook empty for the most part. I was at tunnel view for almost 3 hours as I was treated to one dramatic landscape after another. An occasional car would stop in, but then just as quickly leave due to the freezing rain.

This particular scene unfolded before my eyes as I watched a giant cloud encircle El Capitan from the left. To me it looked as though the Finger of God came out of heaven in a battle of dominance against the mighty granite monolith.
