January 2010, Grand Canyon, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is so vast that it is very difficult as a photographer to convey to the viewer a sense of scale. I shot this particular image using a super telephoto 400mm lens. The view is looking to the north rim from my vantage point on the south side of the chasm. Take a close look at the trees on top of the distant snow-covered rim. Those are Ponderosa Pines, and they can attain heights well over 200 feet tall. I've been to the north rim several times, and I can tell you that those "tiny" trees in this image are about 100 feet tall, the height of a 10-story building. The Grand Canyon is a massive place.
