March 2008, Death Valley National Park, California
This is one of my favorite images in my portfolio. To be sure, it is devoid of beautiful colors and interesting landmarks, but I find the composition compelling. I can totally relate to the far off hiker walking alone in the enormous expanse of Death Valley's Badwater Basin. He was about 1/2 mile away from me, taking an early morning stroll as he appeared to contemplate the deeper things of life. He looked like a tiny speck on the horizon to me, and if it hadn't been for his white shirt, I never would have spotted him in the firstplace. I had to use a 400mm super telephoto lens to bring him in as close as I could. I mean this guy was way out there.
The massive base of the Panamint Mountains provides the backdrop for this image. They rise to an elevation of over 11,000' which is in stark contrast to the floor of the Badwater Basin which lies 200' below sea level. Death Valley is a land of extremes, and I will continue to visit this amazing place as long as I live.
