August 2012, Alstrom Point, Lake Powell, Utah
Lake Powell is a massive man-made lake which was formed by the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. After the completion of the dam in Page Arizona, just south of the Utah border, the Colorado River began to back up into Glen Canyon. In all it took eleven years for the newly-formed Lake Powell to fill, and in the process it became the 2nd largest man-made lake in the United States (behind Lake Mead in Nevada).
Lake Powell is undeniably stunning, but the equally stunning landscapes of Glen Canyon now sit flooded underneath hundreds of feet of water. In the image above, 10,000' Navajo Mountain can be seen rising to the southeast behind Gunsight Butte and Lake Powell at dawn. In the foreground is Utah, but Navajo Mountain is in Arizona.
