Freedom Regained
April 2013, Stevenson Ranch, California
I go mountain biking in the hills behind my home every other day. It serves a twofold purpose of giving me a place to go and pray, and I also get a great workout at the same time. I've always wanted to take Lenée with me, but obviously she could not go up the steep switchbacks. However, the first mile or so is relatively level as the trail follows the contours of the canyon floor. So I bought her a scooter small enough to fit in the trunk of the car. Off we went to "My Mountain" as I affectionally refer to it. Much to our delight, Lenée's new scooter negotiated the lower canyon terrain with ease. It was all I could do to keep up with her.
It was so wonderful to see the joy on her face as she was able to share at least part of my favorite piece of real estate on the planet. She was every bit as much an outdoorsman as me. I so wanted to take her once again to the remote canyons of southern Utah, but it was not to be. We will have the last laugh though, because Lenée will take me on a tour of her new heavenly stomping grounds when I at last meet her again.
