"Renewal of Life"
March 2005, Death Valley National Park, California
This image was taken during what has been called the greatest bloom in the history of Death Valley. Record rainfalls at just the right intervals gave birth to seeds that had been lying dormant on the desert floor for many years. Death Valley is known to have spectacular blooms every few years, but nothing approaching the scale of what was seen in March 2005. The yellow flowers are called desert gold by the locals, while the purple blooms are phacelia.
