"Silverton Panorama"
September 2012, Silverton, Colorado
Silverton is a historic mining town that lies high up in Colorado's breathtaking San Juan Mountains. As the name Silverton implies, silver mining was the economic engine of the day. Mining has all but ceased in the area, but the town now serves as the seat for San Juan County.
The town's elevation of 9300' make it among the highest municipalities in the United States. Highway 550, otherwise known as "the million dollar highway", runs right through the town. The drive on 550 from Durango to Ouray is without a doubt one of the most beautiful stretches of pavement in the country. I particularly like the drive in September when the fall colors are at their peak.
