September 2012, Southwestern Colorado
A "harvest moon" is the full moon which occurs closest to the autumnal equinox (beginning of fall). I was in southwestern Colorado shooting the Indian ruins in Hovenweep National Monument. I left the park at closing and began my one hour drive back to my motel in Blanding Utah. I love that drive because it takes you across some very remote countryside. It's definitely not a place I would want to break down though. As I was passing through some farmland I noticed the full moon begin to emerge above the storm clouds off to the east. I had completely forgotten about the harvest moon - shame on me. I pulled over and set up my camera as quickly as I could. I took the shot seen here, with the foreground cumulonimbus clouds beautifully illuminated by the last rays of sunset.
