A column is actually the union of a stalagmite and a stalactite. A stalagmite grows from the ground up, whereas a stalactite comes down from the ceiling. When the two meet, a column such as that seen here is formed. At the base of this particular column is a crystal clear pool of spring fed water.
This column formation reminded me of the biblical passage where Lot's wife turned and looked at Sodom and Gomorrah as they were being destroyed. God had instructed those fleeing the cities not to look back as the judgement was carried out. Lot's wife disobeyed and became a pillar of salt.
