It's probably safe to assume that the morgue was a busy place in Bodie. Demand for coffins was fueled by violence, bad weather and disease. The coffin standing on end is sized for a child. Indeed, as I visited Bodie's cemetery I was shocked and saddened by the number of gravestones memorializing children who never even reached the age of 5.
