"William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach" February 2011, San Simeon, California Canon EOS 5D MK2, Canon 24-70 lens The soft warm light of sunrise illuminates one of the most scenic beaches on the California Coast. William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach was named after the builder of the famous castle which stands atop the hills just outside of this image. In the background is beautiful San Simeon Bay and San Simeon Point. A hiking trail leads from the pier all the way to the end of the point, and is something anyone staying in the San Simeon area should explore.

Shame on me, for it turns out that I was overlooking a gorgeous 1/2 mile crescent beach fit for a postcard. The shimmering turquoise waters of San Simeon Bay are held in place by one of the most beautiful and classic beaches in all of California. The official name of this gem is William R. Hearst Memorial State Beach. A close look reveals that there are 3 bull elephant seals in this image, but the 3rd (and largest) seal is barely visible half way up the beach. We all owe a great debt of gratitude to the Hearst Corporation for forever setting aside this pristine beach for the public (and elephant seals) to enjoy.
"Morro Bay Harbor at Sunrise" October 2003, Morro Bay, California Toyo 45AII, Fujinon 180A lens, Kodak E100VS 4x5 film Rising 581' above the surrounding ocean, Morro Rock has been used as a navigational aid by sailors for hundreds of years. The rock is a California historical landmark and provides sanctuary for endangered peregrine falcons as well as several other species of birds. Sea otters and seals are frequently seen swimming around the harbor.
