I shot this image in Andrew Molera State Park, which lies at the northern end of Big Sur. The Big Sur River can be seen in the foreground as it empties into the Pacific Ocean.

The historic Big Sur Inn was built by Danish immigrant Helmuth Deetjen and his wife Helen in the 1930's. The hotel is located in the heart of Big Sur on California's infamous Pacific Coast Highway, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This baby elephant seal was in a rookery a few miles north of San Simeon. His face says it all - talk about a pose..................
"Weaner"

I was on the central coast trying to shoot landscapes during a week of non-stop rain. From the perspective of a landscape photographer, rain can be a good or a bad thing. I usually like the rain because it often brings with it beautiful clouds, crystal-clear air, and exquisite light. However, this week it was the "icky" kind of rain - that which is accompanied by dreary grey skies and high winds.

That's the beauty of shooting near San Simeon. If the landscape door is closed, the nature door is always there to fall back upon. I went to some lesser-known beaches to photograph baby elephant seals. By the time late March rolls around, the aggressive (and dangerous) alpha bulls have usually left the rookery. What is left is a few mothers and hordes of noisy and active "weaners". A word of caution is in order though. Even these adorable infants can be aggressive. It is best to photograph them from a distance with a long lens. Early morning is when they are most active.

The tiny village of Gorda lies at the southern end of Big Sur on California's incomparable Highway 1. It has the only gas station between San Simeon and Big Sur.
