February 2010, Tropic, Utah

Mossy Cave is a little-known gem not too far from Bryce Canyon National Park. Reaching the cave in the wintertime requires a short but somewhat difficult 1/4 mile hike through heavy snow.

Storm clouds and 10,000' Navajo Mountain provide a beautiful backdrop for this pair of hoodoos overlooking Lake Powell.

Storm clouds hover over Lake Powell in late August - the heart of the summer monsoon season. Houseboats can be seen moored along the shoreline, occupied by vacationers enjoying the beauty of this enormous desert lake.

The soft light of sunset gently illuminates this corral in a remote Utah canyon.

Dawn arrives over beautiful Lake Powell as seen from a remote area of the lake known as Alstrom Point. Gunsight Butte dominates the scenery in the middle of the bay, whereas 10,000' Navajo Mountain can be seen rising in the background.

While not illegal, travel on Utah's clay roads during a storm is highly discouraged by the BLM, NPS, and any other agency with an acronym you can think of. The problem is that the clay turns to an impassable goo when mixed with water. It doesn't matter if you have all wheel drive, four wheel drive or an army tank - you will get stuck. The wet clay acts almost like quicksand. Years ago I tried to walk out in the stuff before attempting to drive my vehicle through. I immediately sank about a foot into the mud and barely got my foot back out. The stuff is just nasty.

The image above shows monsoon clouds blocking my only exit as I was leaving Alstrom Point in Lake Powell. I had been primitive camping for two nights on the point hoping to capture some nice shots of the lake with storm clouds. I had the whole place to myself just as I had at Toroweap earlier in the week. I love the feeling of isolation and the sound of absolute silence. I'm not sure why - it's just the way I'm wired.

Anyway, now there was the matter of getting back out. Long story short - I made it. Incidentally, the road was washed out the very next day by a flash flood.

Located on Utah's beautiful Highway 12, picturesque Cannonville is a tiny ranch town not far from Kodachrome Basin State Park.

March 2012, Cedar Mesa, Utah
Canon EOS 5D MK2, Canon 70-200 lens

Southern Utah is well known for its amazing assortment of national parks. It seems like the moment you leave one park you enter straight into another. Less well known is the fact that Southern Utah also lays claim to three of the United States premier highways. Highways 12, 24 and 95 are the types of roads that fashion memories for a lifetime. They all probe deep into the Utah wilderness, mesmerizing drivers with undulating curves and unmatched scenery. This particular image shows Highway 95 (also known as the Bicentennial Highway) as it passes over Comb Ridge in Cedar Mesa.

I spent about 45 minutes on scene shooting the location. During that time I saw only three cars including the one in the picture.
Doug Meek > "Clearing Storm over Aspen Grove"

September 2012, near Boulder, Utah
Canon EOS 5D MK2, Canon 70-200 lens

While driving up the southern flank of Boulder Mountain on Utah's stunning Highway 12, I pulled over at a roadside turnout. All along the mountain beautiful groves of aspens were peaking in their golden fall colors. I waited patiently for some sunlight to break through the heavy blanket of clouds. I finally got the break that I was looking for, and it turned out to be better than I had hoped for. A small but focused patch of sunlight shone down on the large aspen grove I was watching. Everything else in the image remained dark, providing a beautiful and dramatic contrast. God is so good to me.

March 2012, Southern Utah
Canon EOS 5D MK2, Canon TS-E 17mm lens

This amazing view of the San Juan River is a few miles north of the tiny town of Mexican Hat, Utah. The scene is very difficult to photograph because it is deceivingly wide. On the horizon you can barely make out the tops of some of the formations at Monument Valley some 20 miles distant.
Doug Meek > "Train Ascending Moab Fault"

March 2012, Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Canon EOS 5D MK2, Canon 70-200 lens

This freight train is heading north out of Moab Utah, ascending a grade through an area known as the Moab Fault. The steep cliffs in this image were formed when seismic activity lifted them high above the earth thousands of years ago. Utah Highway 191 runs along the fault and is just below the bottom of this picture.
Doug Meek > "Hidden Valley Petroglyphs"

April 2011, Moab, Utah
Canon EOS 5D MK2, Canon 24-70 lens

These well preserved petroglyphs can be reached after a moderately strenuous 4 mile (round trip) hike about 3 miles south of Moab. The Moab area is filled with all sorts of Indian rock art including both petroglyphs and pictographs. Sadly, many of them have been defaced by irresponsible vandals. The hike to this particular site is difficult enough to keep out most of these clowns.
