It's hard to imagine that massive Lake Powell is being held back by this comparatively tiny dam. Construction of the dam started in 1956 and was completed 10 years later in 1966. The highly controversial dam resulted in the covering of innumerable pristine canyons in the Glen Canyon Recreational Area. At the same time it also caused the creation of one of the most beautiful lakes to be found anywhere.

Monsoonal clouds begin to form midday above the tiny Arizona community of Marble Canyon. In the background are the Vermillion Cliffs.

Access to Toroweap is achieved via a 91-mile dirt road from St George Utah or a 61-mile dirt road which starts near Fredonia Arizona. I have driven both routes, and of the two the Fredonia route was the easiest. Regardless of which way you come in, the last 7 miles are the same because the 2 routes join together 7 miles before reaching Toroweap. It is those last 7 miles that give the road its notoriety. A high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle is mandatory. The main part of the dirt road is a 30mph smooth grade with occasional washboarding. By contrast, the last 7 mile section took me an hour and a half to negotiate.

This particular image was shot about 10 miles from Toroweap. As you can see the road looks just fine and the scenery is starting to get beautiful. The closer you get to Toroweap, the more beautiful it becomes. The first 50 miles is not nearly so scenic. Scenic or not, I love the drive. It is an amazing feeling driving 4 hours on a road and only seeing one other vehicle the entire time. Once you reach Toroweap itself, the surroundings change from scenic to breathtaking.

August 2012, Mt. Trumbull, Arizona.

Built in 1918, the Mt. Trumbull Schoolhouse is located in one of the most remote areas of the lower 48 United States. From St. George, Utah, adventurers can take a 60-mile dirt road leading to the now abandoned townsite of Mt. Trumbull. Only the schoolhouse remains standing, which also served as a church, dance hall, and town meeting site. Mt. Trumbull's population peaked at around 250 during the 1930's. Mt. Trumbull is about 10 miles from the very remote Grand Canyon north rim area known as Toroweap.

This shot pushed my fear of heights to the limit. You are literally standing on the edge of a sheer cliff with a drop of at least 1000 feet straight down. It's the only way to get the shot. If you stand any further back you won't get the entire river in the image. If you stand any further forward, it will be the most exciting (and last) 15 seconds of your life.
